Stoke City v Shrewsbury
Town
This weekend saw Shrewsbury travel to Stoke for their final game of the
season in the hope of ending on a high, but their hopes were dampened
before the start with the absences of 4 players including our top 2 scorers,
but not to be deterred the girls set out with a strong and positive attitude
which they maintained through to the end. Stoke forced the pressure early
on with a few good attacks that were repelled by the strong but under
fire defence of Alice Gibbons and Lucy Mckelvey, but eventually they broke
through with the first goal of the match.
This gave the incentive for Shrewsbury to force their way back with a
number of surges towards goal, and they came close when an accurate throw-in
by Lucy found Hannah Bates in a good position only to have her shot hit
the bar.It was then Stokes turn to return the play and they scored twice
more towards the end of the period. The second period of the game basically
belonged to Stoke with a stream of attacks being denied by the hard working
defence and good stops by keeper Charlotte Edmunds but after rattling
the goal posts on 3 occasions they finally broke through to score 2 more
goals towards the end of this second period.
The third and final period was a more even affair with both teams sharing
possesion. Shrewsbury had a few more chances to get back in the game late
on, but it was not to be.
This match typified a number of games the girls had played this season, where
all players involved had shown great strength of character and ability
and proved what talented individuals they were, yet left the pitch without
the victory's that they deserved. They can all be proud of their performances
over this season and what steps they may have taken towards a future in
the game. For the record they played 15 matches of which they won 6 and
lost 9, and scored a total of 41 goals. with goals scored by as follows-
Jemma Smith-19.
Jessica Pugh-7.
Danni Prince-3,Nicole Ingham-3,Lucy Wilde-3.
Rebecca Davies-2
Alice Edwards-1,Megan Joseph-1.
own goals-2.
