Shrewsbury Town WFC won the Shropshire Challenge cup last night, in what was the last competitive match to be played at the Gay Meadow, the Town started very brightly, with some excellent play down the right flank from Gina Goulding & Alicia Robinson, who both created chances for strikers Charlotte Corbett & Sian Skelton. Full credit to the Jacs who defended superbly for a full 30 mins, left back Emily Whitfield then hit a superb ball over the top of the Jacs back line, for Corbett to run onto & beat the advancing keeper with an excellent lob into the net. The Town girl’s continued to dominate & went in at half-time with their lead intact.

Half-time 0 – 1

The second half started with the Jacs going with a much more attacking formation & for the first 5mins put the Town under pressure, resulting in an equalising goal, after a messy 15 mins, the Town started to dominate again, with Abi Cottam & Kerry Taylor both hitting the woodwork,. With extra time looming the Town just couldn’t get the all important winner.

Full-time 1 – 1

Extra time started with the Town again creating chance after chance, when Robinson hit a left foot screamer which crashed against the under side of the bar, before bouncing to safety. It was then Player of the Match Robinson who got the winner after the ball came over from the left & only half cleared, she composed herself & hit a superb volley into the Jacs net. The Town then played out the final minutes with more attacking play, without adding to the score. On reflection Town fully deserved their victory, creating many chances throughout and after the disappointment of finishing 2nd in the league, to finish the season of as County champions was a great feeling for this very young, but talented side.
